Keeping Your Pet Cool, Comfortable and Healthy in Every Season

Every season brings something different for pets, from summer heat to damp autumn walks and cold winter mornings. A few small adjustments through the year keep your dog or cat comfortable whatever the weather is doing.
Summer: Take Care in the Heat
Dogs cool down mainly by panting, so hot days and warm cars are risky. Walk early or late when it's cooler, and never leave a pet in a parked car. Pavements can get hot enough to be uncomfortable for paws. If you can't hold the back of your hand on the ground for five seconds, it's too hot for a walk.
Keep Water Easy to Reach
Pets drink more in warm weather, and fresh, easy-to-reach water makes a real difference. Carry water on longer outings and offer small drinks regularly rather than waiting until your pet is very thirsty.
Autumn: Wet Walks and Shorter Days
Autumn means mud, rain and early darkness. A waterproof coat helps smaller and short-haired dogs stay drier, and a towel by the door saves your floors. Add something reflective for evening walks, and check paws for burrs and grit after muddy outings.
Winter: Cold Affects Pets Too
Small, short-haired and older pets often feel the cold more than people expect. Shorter walks in very cold weather, a warm, draught-free bed, and a snug layer on chilly days all help. Wipe paws after walks, since grit and de-icing salt can irritate.
Spring: Allergies, Ticks and Muddy Paws
As the weather warms up, ticks become more active in long grass and woodland. Check your pet after walks and remove any ticks promptly and carefully. A proper tick remover makes it much easier.
Signs Your Pet Is Uncomfortable
In summer, watch for heavy panting, drooling, lethargy or reluctance to move. In winter, look for shivering, lifting paws, or reluctance to go outside. If a pet seems unwell, or you suspect heatstroke, contact your vet straight away rather than waiting.
